New girl in town! Ida May swore she would never make a new best friend after her previous one moved away. And then she met the vivacious and dazzling Stacey Merriweather, and suddenly she and Ida were inseparable. Two friends form an exclusive society after discovering a mermaid nightlight with wish-granting powers. When class bully Jenna starts acting up, Ida turns to the mermaid to make bad things happen to her. Then, Stacey cancels a math exam by invoking the mermaid. They find that the more they use the mermaid’s abilities, the more they need to aid it by shaping reality with “highly creative stories.” At first, Ida accepts all of the lies. Ida begins to suspect that Stacey is telling massive lies—and causing massive trouble at home—in order to gain attention for the mermaid. As a result, Ida is torn between being honest and protecting her friendship with Stacey. Ida has a new best friend, but how can she set the record straight without losing her?
