There are few more effective strategies in Magic: the Gathering than milling, and these are the best ten commanders to use in milling decks.

Though engaging in combat is the most common strategy for achieving victory inCard Game, Magic:Players can also achieve victory through a variety ofMagic. Mill is a common example of a game using an alternative win condition. Card milling occurs when a player places multiple cards from their deck into their graveyard in a single turn. To eliminate opponents in a game of Commander, Mill can be used if a player draws a card and has no more cards left in their deck.

Milling, About | MAGIC: THE GATHERING

While milling an opponent is a powerful tactic, players can also use it on themselves to speedily shuffle through their own graveyard. Thus, let’s take a look at mill decks in the Commander format and find out which commanders are the best choices for those who want to construct a mill deck!

The legendary kraken Wrexial the Risen Deep costs six mana and has a power level of five eight. Whenever it deals combat damage to a player, that player’s controller may cast an instant or sorcery card from their graveyard without paying its mana cost.

In Wrexial’s Dimir-color identity, it has access to a plethora of mill options, making this ability highly synergistic with them, filling a player’s graveyard with powerful spells that can be cast for free.

A simple mill option, Circu, Dimir Lobotomist exiles the top card of its controller’s library whenever that controller casts a blue spell and the top card of its controller’s library whenever that controller casts a black spell, resulting in a total of two cards being exiled whenever either color of spell is cast.

With his ability triggering on the cast of nearly any spell in his deck, Circu provides a consistent means of milling an opponent. Also, even recursion-heavy decks will be at a severe disadvantage because the cards that Circu mills are exiled rather than put in a graveyard.

Priced at five mana for a 2/4 vampire with flying, Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker can mill a significant number of cards from an opponent’s deck whenever he deals combat damage. Each time you deal combat damage to a player, that player reveals the top four cards of their library. Once that happens, all of those cards go into that player’s graveyard.

This ability is especially devastating against low mana curve and, by extension, low land count decks, as it can remove a large number of cards from the opponent’s deck if Mirko Vosk is left unchecked for multiple turns.

Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, the head of House Dimir, is a shapeshifter who goes well with large quantities of mill spells.

Although Lazav costs four mana and is a 3/3 with hexproof, he can copy any creature your opponent puts into a graveyard. It’s possible that a Lasav player could get their hands on their opponent’s strongest creature before they do, as Lazav can copy creatures that have been milled or destroyed via removal.

Furthermore, Lasav retains its hexproof and the ability to become a copy of creatures put in graveyards whenever it becomes a copy of a creature, allowing it to continually adapt.

Whether its user is milling an opponent or themselves, the Mimeoplasm stands out as a sultai mill option due to their ability as a powerful mill comander.

Whenever The Mimeoplasm enters the battlefield, you may exile two creature cards from graveyards. Then, it makes a second trip to exile and returns to the battlefield as a copy of one of the exiled creatures, with as many 1/ 1 counters attached to it as the power of the second exiled creature. The Mimeoplasm is very versatile and adaptable because it can use any creatures in a player’s graveyard as a source of utility and offense.

If a mill player has enough mana, nobody can beat Oona, Queen of the Fae.

Oona, the Flying 5/5 costs six mana, and her controller has the option to pay X mana of any color at any time to select a color for her. Then, if the target player mills X cards of the chosen color, Oona’s controller makes X 1/1 flying faerie rogue tokens. Oona can mill huge swaths of a player’s library at once, or the entire library if infinite mana is involved, when used in conjunction with a large amount of mana or a combo that can create infinite mana.

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant is a self-mill commander that can turn its controller’s library into a value-generating machine.

The player who controls Sidisi discards the top three cards of their library whenever it enters the battlefield or makes an attack. This works well with Sidisi, whose triggered ability, whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from its controller’s library, Sidisi’s controller creates a 2/2 zombie token.

Because of the way this ability is worded, it is best to create a zombie horde by repeatedly milling a small number of cards from your deck, as milling a large chunk of your deck will only result in a single zombie.

Syr Konrad, the Grim, the most recent addition to this list, is a mill commander with the ability to convert mill into direct damage.

In terms of mill commanders, Syr Konrad covers a lot of ground by dealing one damage to all opponents whenever a creature is put into a graveyard. His ability activates whenever a card is placed in a graveyard, making him useful for Syr Konrad’s controller to use in either milling their opponents or gaining more resources.

The activated ability of Syr Konrad, which mills each player a single card for the cost of two mana and grows stronger the more players there are in the game, works in perfect tandem with this.

The Gravetide, like Sidisi, encourages its controller to make use of self-milling effects.

In effect, Muldrotha allows its controller to use their graveyard as if it were another hand, allowing them to cast one spell of each type from there each turn. The more cards a Muldrotha player mills, the more cards they have to cast, giving them more flexibility in how they respond to challenges and ultimately win the game.

The God of Deceit, Phenax, is universally acknowledged as the most trustworthy and effective mill commander. In addition to being indestructible as befits a god of Theros, Phenax also has a clause that states it isn’t a creature as long as its controller doesn’t have a devotion to black and blue greater than seven, making it extremely difficult to remove from play.

It’s easy to understand how Phenax’s ability can be used to mill cards, as it simply allows the controller to tap any creature to mill as many cards as the creature’s toughness for each player. With this commander at the helm, any creature can be transformed into efficient mill engines that can mow through an opponent’s deck in record time.
