Best Playable Character In Super Smash Bros. Brawl – When Masahiro Sakurai originally designedTo the Rescue, Super Smash Bros.Originally released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, it was never meant to be played at a competitive level. The game’s original intention was as a light multiplayer party game, but it has since become a major international eSport.

That’s why, over time, professional gamers have honed and even found new uses for the playstyles of many different characters in games. Because of this, some characters will become significantly more powerful than the rest in ranked play. Here, I’ll be ranking the best and most flawed playable characters in the history of the Smash games.

1. Meta Knight – Brawl

*

In my opinion, Meta Knight is the best of the bunch. There were serious discussions about excluding him from tournaments due to his extreme imbalance with the rest of Brawl’s roster. He could easily come back from being knocked down and had moves that had a good chance of killing. We can only hope that Nintendo will never again create a character as broken as Meta Knight was in Brawl.

2. Bayonetta – Smash 4

*

Bayonetta made her debut in the Smash series in Smash 4, and she left quite an impression. When it comes to her neutral game, combos, and ability to pull off repulsive zero-to-deaths, she is second only to the aforementioned character. Two separate times, Nintendo had to tone down the character’s power level. Despite these changes, the best Bayonetta players are still able to find ways to use her to their advantage, making her the best character overall.

3. Fox – Melee

*

One of the most popular candidates for a damaged character in Melee is Fox, who is joined by his very similar counterpart Falco. Due to the high volume of players who employ Fox, the character has developed an almost cult-like following. His attacks are among the quickest in the game, he can rack up damage quickly with his blaster, and his shine (down special) attack can be used to execute devastating combos. When refined, Fox’s Melee form is nearly unbeatable.

4. Cloud – Smash 4

*

Cloud was a top-tier singles player in Smash 4, but he was nearly unbeatable when paired with a partner. His attacks had enormous hitboxes and he had some of the most devastating damage in the game, making him an ideal doubles character. Players in doubles tournaments honed the art of using his limit meter to execute ridiculous combos that were lethal at even the lowest percentages. To the relief of series fans, Cloud was severely nerfed in Smash Ultimate, making his use in doubles matches fair.

5. Pikachu – Smash 64

It’s unlikely that Brawl’s Ice Climbers will top this list, but they may have the most annoying move ever. Popo and Nana’s chain grab combination, which, if executed properly, results in a painfully drawn-out death, became notorious. When a player has their opponent in their grasp, they must immediately perform a down throw and grab again. Having two ice climbers means that one of them only needs to be within reaching distance to make a grab. The character could take enough hits before dying from an up throw. The fans weren’t thrilled by this style of play, but it got the job done.

7. Kirby – Smash 64

*

In the first game of the Smash series, Masahiro Sakurai was overwhelmingly powerful, but this is to be expected given that he is also responsible for creating the Kirby series. Due to his superior recovery, Kirby could launch attacks from offstage when many other characters could not. Also, Kirby’s uneven hitboxes and reliable down air made him a formidable opponent. Even though Kirby wasn’t the most overpowered character in 64, he still managed to crack the top ten.

8. Peach – Ultimate

*

I only included one Ultimate character, Peach, and I think she belongs there. The best players have figured out how to take advantage of her ability to levitate, and they’ve spent years perfecting her gameplay. She is equipped with an array of projectiles, reliable aerials, and a formidable counterattack. Peach’s aerials and floating abilities allow her to perform some insane combos. Peach is the best playable character from a purely professional standpoint.

9. Diddy Kong – Smash 4

*

Early iterations of Diddy Kong in Smash 4 were very difficult to defeat, but he was eventually nerfed. Despite his diminutive size, Diddy Kong has shown early percent kill confirms, making him a difficult opponent to match up with. His grab combos are among the best in the game, and his neutral special projectile and side special, the monkey hump, are both reliable and annoying. Before Nintendo nerfed him in the first patch, Diddy was a nightmare to play against.

10. Marth – Melee

*

While not perfect, Marth wasn’t a broken character, either. Aside from his speed, he also had great hit power, edge-guard ability, and a plethora of advantageous matchups. At the time of the game’s initial release, he was largely unknown to American gamers because they were unfamiliar with the Fire Emblem series. Seeing how well-liked Marth (and Roy) were in Melee, Nintendo decided to bring Fire Emblem games to the United States.
